A Daily Dose of Hoodhealth Rx
My name is Kaleb J. Hill, I am a pre-med student at Xavier University of Louisiana. I have over 7 years experience in healthcare as a nursing assistant. I believe healthcare is my calling. I have aspired to be a physician since I was 5 yrs old. I am living my “When I Grow Up Story.” I was exposed to healthcare watching my mother care for patients all of my life. I have served as a primary caregiver for several family members.
My Health Living Transformation Weightloss Story
Growing up in the deep south, I was an overweight child and didn’t learn about the effects of food on my body until reaching an unhealthy 360 lbs. in 2010. At the beginning of my fitness journey, I started FitnessFleet, as a community service project and a way to educate myself and others. Since 2010, I have maintained a 110 weight loss using the practical wellness tips I share under the hashtag #hoodhealth on twitter.
The Causes
I am currently a health advocate aspiring to be a physician. My current causes are: men’s health, breast cancer, childhood obesity, HIV/AIDS awareness, and diabetes. I have noticed that several caregivers forget to take care of themselves. I am leading by example with my company, FitnessFleet, where we bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and health coaches. Anyone who is exposed to FitnessFleet’s mission is well aware of our commitment to our community. During FitnessFleet’s developmental stages I served as a primary caregiver for my grandparent, Chairperson for the volunteer of the American Diabetes Association, volunteer for a local food bank in Birmingham, AL.
The Vision
My first experience with outreach was encouraging families to get back to health with - walking, bike trails, fresh vegetables through a local produce delivery company in Birmingham, AL. I have always sought ventures that helped in my own health journey and later translated it for my peers and family members. Many of my family members still adhere to the wellness tips that I have shared with them. I believe we must get to the root of the issue and educate parents on how to continue a healthy legacy through their kids with cooking, choosing healthy foods and surrounding them with an health environment.
In the future, I would like to partner with local physicians, neighborhood presidents, local fresh produce companies, holistic and traditionally health based organizations to provide the tools to help them continue to live an active lifestyle. FitnessFleet and hoodhealth Rx, will provide quality care and education for individuals living with chronic illness and serve as an outlet that is health based that bring families together helps enhance society. It is an honor to serve as your health advocate.
I am also a contributing writer for HBCUstory and Healthy Black Men.
