In remembrance of September 11th and in the wake of Hurricane Isaac, help ensure the safety of 7th Ward and Central City residents in times of disaster.
HandsOn New Orleans and American Red Cross are looking for caring and energetic volunteers for a September 14th disaster preparedness canvassing. On that day we will have two different groups working in the 7th Ward and in Central City. Volunteers will work in teams and go door to door with preparedness information created by our partners at Red Cross.
Both neighborhoods have high numbers of elderly residents who live alone and residents without access to vehicles. Volunteers will be trained in fire and hurricane readiness talking points, given canvassing materials to distribute, and will then engage household members they encounter on their preparations should a disaster strike. Hurricane readiness is obviously an important topic for New Orleans, but the number one disaster that our local Red Cross affiliate responds to is fires. Safety and education in both of these areas is important for the people of our city. For more information email HandsOn at volunteer@handsonneworleans.
